Scarborough College

Scarborough CollegeThe Sixth Form at Scarborough College combines the very best of the traditional with the very best of the modern. We believe firmly that students need opportunities to develop leadership skills and so we have a traditional Head of School, Prefect structure and House System which allow the Sixth Form to undertake leadership roles as House Captains or Prefects. As such, they are responsible for organising events and rotas, hosting events, assisting the staff in the guidance of younger students.

However, the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and the small class sizes mean that the staff get to know their students well. The students enjoy dedicated modern facilities, including a study centre, common room and Sixth Form Café. The College offers the International Baccalaureate as the course of study, and this stimulating, forward-looking qualification prepares the students well for university study both in the UK and abroad.

Our students are both local and international, with Sixth Formers joining us from China, Germany, Austria, France, Spain, Thailand and Mexico to name a few, as well as our home grown students from Scarborough, the surrounding area and from around the UK. The average percentage of international students in the Sixth Form is usually between 15-20% which gives students an amazing opportunity to study with peers from all around the world, aged 16-18.

The academic programme is well supported by a wide range of activities, including team and individual sports, clubs and activities, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, drama, music and art. There are cultural visits to places in the UK and abroad, with biennial expeditions such as the ones to Morroco, Borneo and Malawi. The Sixth Form committee organise a range of social events throughout the academic year that are enjoyed by all.

A schedule of talks and lectures is available on a range of topics including studying abroad, applications to international universities, career-related discussions, health and fitness and philosophy. Throughout the school, support for Careers and Higher Education guidance is given by specialist staff and our dedicated Sixth Form Study Centre offers exceptional resources to the older students.

We are preparing our students to be the professionals of the future and their academic and social development are of vital, equal concern. The students have a dress code and should attend in business wear. They are taught the value of independent, hard work, keeping to deadlines and commitment. They emerge as confident, capable young people who are ready for the next phase of life or education.
